PA School Bus Stopping Laws

Stop for School Buses – It’s the Law

To protect student safety, drivers are required by law to stop under the following circumstances:

  • When you approach or overtake a stopped school bus with red flashing lights and the stop arm extended

  • When approaching an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red flashing lights and the stop arm extended

You must:

  • Stop at least 10 feet away from the school bus

  • Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is fully retracted

  • Wait until all children have safely reached a secure location before proceeding

Know Your Responsibilities

  • Over 1.5 million children ride school buses daily in Pennsylvania

  • School buses travel over 400 million miles each year transporting students

  • Every year, children are injured or killed by motorists illegally passing stopped school buses

  • 60-day driver’s license suspension
