Title IX Rights

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs and activities at schools, colleges, and universities that receive federal funding. If any part of an institution receives federal funds, Title IX applies to the entire institution.

Title IX protects students, employees, applicants for admission or employment, and other individuals from all forms of sex discrimination—including discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, or failure to conform to traditional gender stereotypes. These protections apply to all individuals, regardless of sex, race, national origin, disability, full- or part-time status, or any other factor.

Title IX Coordinator Role

All federally funded educational institutions must designate at least one Title IX Coordinator responsible for ensuring compliance with the law. This includes overseeing investigations, providing training, and coordinating the institution’s response to reports of discrimination or harassment. Institutions must also provide contact information for the Title IX Coordinator to all students and staff.

Institutions may not exclude, separate, or deny benefits to any person based on sex unless such action is explicitly allowed under Title IX regulations. If a school district considers invoking an exception, the Title IX Coordinator should be directly involved in the review process, working alongside school officials and legal counsel to ensure compliance.
