Physical Education Syllabus – Rochester High School

Objectives:  The purpose of physical education in the high school setting is two fold.  (1)  It is required so that each student maintains a high degree of wellness by participating in daily fitness tasks designed to benefit all aspects of one’s overall health.  (2)  It is required to expose students to a variety of lifetime fitness activities that the students may incorporate in their own lifestyles so as to combat life’s major illnesses and diseases.  Moreover, by exposing students to lifetime fitness “tasks,” students are given knowledge and tools that allow them to better manage their level of fitness which leads to a higher “quality of life” as they age and mature.

Goals of class:
Each student will…
  • Have an increased understanding of lifetime fitness activities and popular sports
  • Comprehend rules and strategies involved in succeeding in major sports and/or activities
  • Improve upon skills involved in teamwork, problem solving, cooperation, and sportsmanship
  • Be exposed to principals relating to several areas of wellness...see below
The Intellectual Aspect:
This aspect of wellness refers to having a curiosity and strong desire to learn, as well as staying stimulated with new ideas and problem solving. (Ex. - game strategy)

This aspect of wellness is striving to meet emotional needs constructively. It is maintaining good health, a positive attitude, high self-esteem, and a strong self-image. (Ex. – Sportsmanship)

Rochester Area School District      Physical Education Policy

Basic Rules of Conduct:

  • Demonstrate proper use of physical education equipment by using it for its intended purpose or otherwise directed by the teacher
  • Demonstrate appropriate sportsmanship and fair play / no swearing, inappropriate language, or disruptive behavior
  • Pay attention when directions are given
  • Appropriate dress is required for credit

Grading Policies:

  • Students can earn up to 10 points a day for class.  In order to receive the maximum 10 points, a student must “dress” for class, participate fully, and demonstrate good sportsmanship when in each class session.  (see supplemental attached A)
  • “Tardies” will have a negative impact on your grade.  In a participation-based class, being tardy for class will limit the amount of participation time, thus resulting in a deduction in your daily point total.  If you miss more than 20 minutes of class, It is considered an absence
  • If a student is absent from class, he/she will have to make-up class in order to receive credit.  If the student does not make up class they will receive a 0 for the day.  You cannot make up classes in which you do not participate in.  Each student (who has class every day (AB)) may receive up to 2 “freebie” classes per 9 weeks.  Each student (who has class every other day (A or B)) may receive up to 2 “freebie” classes per semester.  (see supplemental attached B)
***It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their absences***
  • In order to receive full credit for class, proper dress must be worn.  This includes…
    • Appropriate shoes (tied in knots / secured) not simply looped! – shoes should never come off!!!
    • Appropriate length shorts and worn appropriately
    • No belly shirts
    • No tank tops, including beaters
    • No shirts depicting inappropriate or explicit material

MEDICAL EXCUSE POLICY!!!

  • Medical excuses must be signed by doctor and dated! (“UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE” may not be accepted!)   NO notes from home will be accepted
  • It is the student’s responsibility to give the PE teacher a copy of any medical excuse
  • Must list restrictions as well as a list of allowable activities (ex) walking
  • If you do not take class due to a medical excuse, you are not permitted to participate in extracurricular activities which require physical exertion, such as flag or drill team, football, cheerleading, basketball, and/or other sports.

Locker Room:

  • Students are responsible for their valuables.  Students can bring a lock for their gym locker to lock up clothes and valuables if they choose, but the teachers recommend that students keep valuables in their school issued locker.  The teacher is not responsible for your valuables!  Read above!
Supplemental A:
Points are deducted for minimal or a lack of participation.  Points are also deducted for inappropriate clothing, and students receive a certain amount of points based on partial dress (teacher discretion).  If a student dresses, but only participates for part of the class, points will be deducted accordingly.  If a student dresses, but does not participate, no points may be awarded!
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP – Good sportsmanship is an all encompassing term that is often subjective in nature.  Sportsmanship in this class setting can be defined by the following criteria…
  • Proper and fair play
  • Display of conflict resolution skills during activity disagreements
  • No swearing:  during the activity / about the level of competition / your opponents / your teammates / the officiating / etc.
  • Cordial and respectful behavior towards other players and staff
  • Not participating in destructive behavior (self / equipment related / etc.)

Supplemental B:
All make-up classes are done after school and must be completed by 3:00 p.m.  In order to make-up class, students must change clothes and complete the exercise circuit in order to receive full credit.  Students must coordinate with the teacher for the make-up of classes.  Students can also make up class in the morning with teacher approval.  Only 1 make-up class can be made up a day.

Notes:
Freebie classes are calculated at the end of the term.  Since each class period is worth 10 class points, the teacher may add up to 20 points to each student’s total at the end of the 9 weeks for (AB) students and up to 10 points to each student’s total at the end of the 9 weeks for (A or B) students.  Class participation and behavior dictate how many of these points you gain.

All students are required to take a physical education final.  Since A or B students have class for the entire year, they are required to take a midterm and a final.

NOTE:  Students not taking physical education class will sit on the steps or blue benches (with teacher permission,) and remain quiet.  Students may work on other class work but are not to interact with students participating in class.  If you choose not to take class, you cannot join the activity later in class.

NOTE:  If, for whatever reason, you arrive over 5 minutes late for class, it is the teacher’s discretion whether or not to allow you to dress and/or participate in that class.  However, participation points may still be deducted.

NOTE:  Students serving ISS or OSS receive zero points for the days they are suspended. Students must make up class after school (see supplemental B above) to reclaim the lost points.

NOTE:  The teachers have the right to modify / adjust stated rules.  Not dressing but still participating does not guarantee you ˝ credit.

NOTE:  No cell phones visible in class, we will take them in accordance with school policy.
